DOPESICK
Film and television has a unique ability to bring humanity to shaded topics. Dopesick explores this nation's darkest: the opioid epidemic. Dopesick is a fictionalized look at OxyContin's proliferation across the country through the eyes of a small town ravaged by the drug. It's non-linear timeline jumps between a variety of groups; a doctor and his patients in rural Virginia, lawyers at a small law firm bent on exposing Purdue's crimes, a collection of agents at the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), OxyContin sales reps, and the Sackler family themselves.
The result is a gripping and devastating story about how dangerous greed fostered an explosive addiction crisis that still festers in communities today. Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever, and Rosario Dawson each shine. Ms. Dever is a particular force, driving home the toll the disease takes at the family scale. If you, like me, are part of the one half of U.S. adults who know/knew someone struggling with drug addiction, you'll find some disturbingly familiar nuances throughout the limited series. Five episodes are available to stream on Hulu.
DICKINSON
A modernized, eccentric retelling of Emily Dickinson's prolific life. I consider this show Apple TV's crowned jewel. Though she's bound by the time and societal constraints of an earlier age, Dickinson spins the period-drama into a youthful, engaging story that grounds itself with allegories tailor-made for the present day.
Hailee Steinfeld stars as the titular poet, navigating through life and love as she wrangles with the insatiable and double-edged desire for fame.
Is it the most accurate retelling of her life? No! But it nevertheless manages to capture the crazy, sensual, and existential nature of her impressive body of work. And turns a legendary, intangible historical figure into someone lovingly, hilariously, and sometimes, tragically, human.
Two seasons are available to stream, with the third and final arriving on Nov. 5th.
